Start with where customers make decisions.
A customer searching for “project management tools for small teams” might visit several sites before signing up, or ask AI and choose from its suggestions. For search, track impressions, clicks and page conversions. For AI, check brand mentions, accuracy and whether the sources support the recommendations.
Here, GEO means generative engine optimization. AI products differ in retrieval, citations and personalization, so one answer from one model cannot represent the entire market.
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| What you observe | Pages discovered and visited through search | Brand understanding, mentions and citations in generated answers |
| Work to prioritize | Crawling and indexing, search intent, content and page experience | Verifiable brand facts, question coverage, sources and platform conditions |
| Evidence to use | Search performance, target pages and meaningful conversions | Original questions, complete answers, sources, time and test conditions |
| Where customers may convert | Visit the official site from search, then inquire or buy | Visit through a citation, or discover the brand and convert through another channel later |
Share the content. Measure each channel separately.
A product page that clearly explains features, intended users, requirements and limitations helps people searching and gives AI useful source material. Original research, real usage evidence, product documentation and sourced comparisons are worth maintaining over time.
Google states that SEO fundamentals still apply to its generative search, with no need for special AI markup or llms.txt. This guidance is specific to Google; it does not mean every AI service follows the same rules. Read Google’s generative search guide.
We organize pages around what people need to do: service pages explain what to buy, tools let them try the product, comparisons help them choose and guides explain how to assess results. Rewording the same question does not require another page.
State how much you tested before reporting the change.
For SEO, separate branded and unbranded queries by page and record search clicks, visits and qualified inquiries. For GEO, fix the questions and conditions first, then track mentions, citations and factual errors separately. A failed test is not an absent brand mention.
For repeat tests, record the question version, platform or model, search status, region, device and time. Keep API answers separate from consumer website or app results. Open cited sources to verify them; ordinary links in an answer are not automatically citation evidence.
Compare publication and retest dates to observe changes. Model updates, test conditions and other marketing activity can also affect results, so note them. A before-and-after change does not prove that a particular optimization caused it.
Spend first on what most affects customer decisions.
- Your pages are not being discovered:First check that important pages are accessible, crawlable and indexable before investing heavily in content.
- You have traffic, but customers still do not understand the product:Add product facts, use cases, comparisons and buying requirements, with a clear next step for customers.
- AI describes your brand inaccurately:Check sources and your website’s descriptions, resolve conflicting information and retest with the same questions.
- You need to check a specific market, website or app experience:Arrange human tests in that situation rather than substituting API answers.
- Your content is reliable, but reach is limited:Publish through relevant industry sites and channels, with clear disclosure of the format and commercial relationship.
This is niubigeo’s suggested order of work. Choose your actual priorities based on the current situation, available evidence and business goals.
